Thanksgiving
When a baby is born we want to celebrate. We want to thank the people who have supported us and we want to thank God for the gift of a child.
Thanksgiving is a special service that allows you to give thanks for and to celebrate the birth or adoption of your child. The Thanksgiving service allows you to do this without the commitment that baptism involves.
During the Thanksgiving service parents and families give thanks for the birth or adoption of a child and everyone prays for family life. A Thanksgiving service is not a Baptism. There are no promises to make about the Christian faith. The child will be blessed and prayed for, and supporting friends will promise to support the parents in bringing up their baby.
You can choose readings and prayers that mean something to you and you may want a favourite hymn or song included. The service includes the naming of the child.
You choose people who you want to be supporters of you and your child. They are not called Godparents – that is a term used for sponsors in Baptism. Supporters make promises to be there for your child, to help you as the child grows and to be a special friend.
At St Francis we are really happy to help you plan your Thanksgiving service and will conduct the service for you at a time to suit you and your family.
