🎤 Interview with an ESOL Tutor 🧑‍🏫

Ever wondered what a day in the life of an ESOL tutor is like? Here's a little peek behind the scenes!

🔎What's on your desk?

🍌 Bananas – A quick energy boost to keep me going through busy teaching days.

📎 Stapler – There's always another worksheet to prepare! It keeps everything organised and ready for class.

🎧 Headphones – My little space for motivation and creativity while planning lessons.

💻 Computer – Probably my most important teaching tool. I love creating lessons that are different every time, tailored to the students in front of me. Today, our learners wanted to build their job vocabulary, so instead of simply giving them the answers, they're matching pictures with words to discover the language for themselves.

💙 What motivates you?

The biggest motivation is our students.

They arrive with determination, commitment and a real desire to learn. I want to meet them halfway. Sometimes students already know exactly what they need, and I can help provide the tools. Other times they're motivated but don't know where to begin. My role is to create a calm, welcoming environment where they can discover what they need, build confidence and feel comfortable enough to ask for help.

✏️ What is one piece of stationery you couldn't live without?

For a teacher, stationery is everything!

But if I had to choose one thing, it would be a spare rubber or a bottle of Tippex.

It might sound simple, but it represents something important. Mistakes are normal. They can be corrected, learned from and often become our greatest opportunities for growth. Our classroom is a safe space to make mistakes, try again and keep learning.

🌍 What word would describe being an ESOL Tutor at St Francis Employability?

Memorable!

Every lesson, every student and every day adds another rich thread to the tapestry of people, cultures and stories that I have the privilege of being part of. Watching learners grow in confidence, develop their English and realise their potential is something I will always remember.

It's a role that teaches me just as much as I hope I teach them. 💙
